Help your child learn what school can’t always teach.

Confidence, safety, curiosity and everyday independence are learned at home as much as in class. Here are simple ways to build them, a few minutes at a time.

Practical life skills and personal safety education for children

Children learn the most important skills through everyday practice at home. You don’t need a curriculum: a question at dinner, a small task done alone, and a calm conversation go a long way.

Everyday life skills to practise at home

  • Making simple decisions and explaining why
  • Handling small amounts of money at a shop
  • Knowing their full name, a parent’s phone number and their address
  • Asking a trusted adult for help, and knowing who those adults are
  • Finishing a task without being reminded
  • Solving a problem by trying, adjusting and trying again

Talking about personal safety, calmly

Personal safety education works best when it builds confidence rather than fear. Help your child name trusted adults, understand that their body belongs to them, practise saying no to anything that feels wrong, and know that they should always tell you, even if someone asks them to keep a secret. Short, regular, age-appropriate conversations are more effective than one big talk.

Building scientific thinking at home

Before you answer your child’s next “why”, ask what they think. Then find out together: test it with a cup of water, a torch or a seed in a jar. Our free curiosity lab has questions that change on every visit, each with a way to test the answer at home.
